Turning a proprietary agrifood culture into an instrument for territorial growth is the ambitious goal of the Agrifood District of Excellence of the Roman Castles and Prenestini Mountains. This is a joint project where public and private parties work together to promote and valorise the foodstuffs and typical products of an area which, for centuries, has been known for its "fresh air and good food".

Qualification and promotion: these are the keys to i) raise awareness of the numerous products of excellence, ii) produce added value for the quality foodstuffs that have made our country famous worldwide, iii) support the farms and producers, helping them face the challenges of global markets and, above all, iv) give the food and wine of the territory a modern dress while fully respecting the traditions.

The Agrifood District of Excellence of the Roman Castles and Prenestini Mountains, promoted with the "District of Excellence" brand, is one of the five districts identified by the Lazio Region’s Office of Agriculture, in compliance with Regional law no. 1/2006.
Citing the definition contained in this law: "agrifood districts of excellence are defined as those local production systems characterized by a major economic realities, by the interrelationships-interdependence of farms and agrifood production and by one or more production certificates and safeguards as per current European Community and national standards, or by traditional or typical forms of production".

The economic value and structural consistency of many farms and agrifood companies within the territory, the deep-rooted history of some production supply chains and the high concentration of DOC wines within the entire Region: these are the foundations for establishing an Agrifood District of Excellence in the Roman Castles and Prenestini Mountains.
The District of Excellence promotes a project for redevelopment, a project that involves the major public and private partners throughout the territory, guided by the Mountain District of the Roman Castles and Prenestini Mountains as leading agency. Establishment of the district is an opportunity to qualify and promote development of the territory through modern, effective "teamwork" among local economic players.

One of the specific goals of the project is to increase the added value of consolidated production sectors — the supply chains linked to the growing of grapes, production of wines and processing of pork — to improve the conditions for market access.
Equally important is the increase in areas which are not yet fully developed but which are deemed strategic for territorial growth, areas such as dairy products and baked goods. Finally, traditional products will be valorised by integration with local restaurants and food services, thus helping bring together producers and chefs, those who can best interpret the territory's multi-faceted gastronomical traditions so deeply rooted in the past.
